Spessartite garnet also known as Spessartine or Mandarin garnet, are the orange to red orange variety, often referred to as "root beer" colored Garnets. It is bright orange when pure, but an increase in the iron content makes the stone darker orange to red. The name is derived from Spessart, Germany, where this variety was first discovered.
